Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit for which international students may apply upon completion of their program of study at any eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI). The PGWP application must be submitted within 180 days from the day your DLI institution issues your final marks or from the first date you receive a written confirmation of graduation from the Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
You may apply from within Canada if you hold a valid temporary status (e.g.: student status or visitor) or from outside Canada if you have left Canada.
You must have maintained full-time student status in Canada during each academic session AND you must have received your final transcript and or an official letter from the eligible DLI confirming that you have met the requirements to complete the study program.
Also note, if your study permit has been expired or is about to expire you may apply for visitor visa before proceeding with the PGWP application. If you apply for PGWP before the expiry of your study permit, you are eligible to start working full time right away, even while your application is under process.

Qualified Institutions for PGWP

The candidate should give proof that the program or programs of study were taken in Canada at one of the subsequent qualified Canadian selected learning institutions (DLIs):
  • Post-secondary public institutions like college, technical schools, university or CEGEP in Quebec; or

  • Post -secondary private institutions that operate under same rules as a public institute;

  • Canadian private institutions that are authorized to award degree as per the provincial law to the students who are enrolled in study programs leading to a degree;

  • Secondary and post-secondary private schools (in Quebec) that provides qualifying programs of 900 hours or more, leading to a diploma certificate.

Spouses and common-law partners of post-graduation work permit holders

Spouses or common-law partners of international graduate students may apply for open work permits if the following conditions are met;
  • Graduates must hold a position that corresponds to NOC skill type 0 and skill level A or B and provide proof.

  • A letter from an employer confirming their position, or a copy of their job offer or employment contract.

  • Copies of their last three pay stubs.
